History
The Sinhala hound is an endemic dog found throughout Sri Lanka and often lives on the streets. According to a legend, when Prince Vijaya first came to Sri Lanka in the 6th century BC, he was greeted by the barking voices of these dogs. There is no further evidence or written record of this breed, but some believe that the Sinhala hound mentioned in the Mahavamsa is that the dog will return in time. The Mahavamsa is also known as the "Great Chronicle". It is a historical historical genealogy that has been carefully kept in Sri Lanka. In the chronicles, domestic dogs belonging to the Stone Age inhabitants of the island are mentioned. However, we cannot guarantee that they are real Sinhala hounds.
Historically, Sinhala hounds come in a variety of colors, but brown and dark brown bundles are the most common. Apparently, they are described as observant, alert, friendly, and obedient with a strong sense of smell. They are thought to be very similar to the African Basenji, the New Guinea Singing Dog and the Australian Dingo. Unfortunately, we do not know if these types are related in any way.
Imported dog breeding has long been neglected by the authorities, and only recently has the Sri Lankan Kennel Club been encouraged to recognize the territory as a breed.
